Is Your Pain Due to a Disc Injury?
Do you find it difficult to find a comfortable position when you sit, stand or sleep?
Do you have a radiating pain shooting down your leg or arm? You may have a disc problem originating in your lower back or cervical spine. Chiropractic care may help you solve this problem without drugs or surgery.

Picture each of your discs as being connected above and below each vertebra
in your spine. Cartilage pads separate and cushion each of your 24 vertebrae and form a series of “flat” joints that extend from your neck to your lower back. This flexible joint action allows your neck and back to move, bend and twist.

Discs consist of an inner center of gel-like fluid (the nucleus), which is contained
in a tough outer casing (the annulus). The entire disc is surrounded by bands of ligaments that hold the joint together. Discs do not have their own blood supply. They depend on proper movement of your spine to transport the nutrients and lubrication needed for healthy joint movement.

How Disc Injuries Occur
Over time lack of exercise, improper body mechanics or the natural aging process may cause disc degeneration. Sudden forceful movements
like a fall, heavy lifting, an auto accident or even a violent sneeze may cause disc injuries. Such degeneration or injuries may cause the following conditions:

• As discs narrow and dry out, vertebrae come closer together.

• A weakened or injured disc interferes with spinal movement and if not corrected can eventually lead to disabling arthritis.

• Unhealthy discs may cause bony outgrowths to form, narrowing the openings in vertebrae where nerve roots pass,
often resulting in a painful arthritic condition that can cause permanent disability.

• Ruptured discs lose their ability to cushion and absorb shock. Pressure on weak discs can cause outer ligaments
to stretch and the nucleus to bulge.

• Continued pressure can be another cause for the disc to tear, rupture or herniate. Such tears can allow the contents
of the disc to squeeze out. Escaped material can press against a nerve and cause severe pain, or the gel-like material
can create a painful inflammatory reaction.

Don’t Ignore Your Discs
It’s important to note that just because you don’t have any symptoms does not mean you don’t have a problem. A disc problem can develop over several years without you knowing it. Starting a program of chiropractic care can prevent disc problems from occurring. Chiropractic can help keep your discs healthy, so you feel your very best.

If you already have damage, chiropractic can stop or slow the degeneration process, and the sooner you receive care, the better your chances
of complete recovery. By restoring normal range of motion to your joints, your discs can receive proper nutrients from surrounding fluids,
resulting in healthier movement and less pain!
